On 22nd and 23rd of October 2018 the partnership of the new project “SymfoS for Youth Care” met for the first time in the UK to agree on key elements of the project development. The project aims to improve the integration chances of disadvantaged young people (NEETS) in Europe by an innovative counselling method based on the approach of Symbol Work. Working with symbols offers young people an additional, universal language. Under the leadership of the german coordinator Sozialwerk Düren (DE) the partners Hafelekar (AT), University of Gloucestershire (UK), Asociación Caminos and Colegio ColpolsocA (both ES) and Associacao A3S and Instituto Politecnico Porto (both PT) are working in the following 3 years on the implementation of the methodology in the youth welfare system.
On the 27th of January 2019 the the partner consortium “SymfoS for Youth Care” met for the second time in Düren, Germany to discuss the progress and upcoming activities of the project development.
From the 28th of January to the 1st of february, a training was held in the town of Nideggen, Germany for youth workers to get familiar with the methodology of symbol work to disseminate it nationally later during the project.
ISCAP International Week is meant to be a scientific, pedagogical, (inter)cultural and social event, based on:
- Lectures/Workshops/ Seminars/ Short Language Courses taught by guest lecturers;
- Project development / Brainstorming Session/Collaborative Work… amongst lecturers/staff of the same field of studies/ research interests for sharing and project development;
- Meetings/ Training Sessions
- Social and Cultural Programs
During the Brainstorming and Networking session at ISCAP’s International Week 2019, the projects in which ISCAP is involved, including SymfoS for Youth Care, were presented to an audience of circa 30 people. SymfoS was presented by one of its members, Prof. Viviana Meirinhos, and was the subject of great interest and curiosity. Several questions were asked and answered, and contacts have been made for future dissemination and cooperation purposes.
The information about the project will be constantly available in ISCAP’s website. This website is shown to all participants in our events upon the dissemination of research work, but also to partners and colleagues from other institutions. The website allows for visitors to refer to the project’s official website.
SymfoS brief presentation to Italian partners at the networking session of CoSki21 Multiplier Event
The presentation of the CoSk21 – Core Skills for the 21st Professionals and its outputs to other higher education institutions that are especially interested in international cooperation and possibilities. The multiplier event covered the several topics. The target groups of the event were:
- Key actors on the developing of soft skills at universities
- Key actors for lifelong learning and soft skills training
- Associated partners (companies) advisers.
To reach a high exploitation of the results and sustainability, multiplier events will also be promoted to education providers: teachers, trainers, HR staff at companies.
The event counted on the participation of approximately 15 participants, and special focus was given to representatives from national enterprises and international lecturers, to whom SymfoS was presented and discussed.
The approach SymfoS for Youth was presented to the students of the last year of the Human Resources Degree within the module of “Methods of Individual Diagnostic and Development”. 45 students were present.
After a theoretical presentation, a demonstration with one of the SymfoS tool was implemented with one young women and tow of her colleagues as buddy system. The rest of the class were observers. At the end there was a debate on the implementation.
From 21st to 25th of October the second transnational training will take place in the South of Spain in Granada. Each partner will send 3 participants to be trained as SymfoS for Youth Care Practitioners. After the event in Spain national implementation will take place in all countries.

SymfoS Practice was an event dedicated to
- exercise the SymfoS method by the Portuguese team,
- present it to university students who study in the human development fields; and
- reflect and systematize the learnings of the SymfoS training weeks
The event had 13 youth participants, the Symfos project teams (A3S and IPP), and the Portuguese trainees (who were in the Germany and Spanish trainings). 4 different exercises were developed during this event.
